In Cryptid Creek: Build a Legend, players compete to craft the most convincing fake cryptid from mismatched body parts to save their dying town through tourism. Only one player can win, but if the hoax is exposed, everyone loses together. Players bid on specimen cards from six atmospheric locations (Road, Bridge, Creek, Woods, Swamp, Field) to collect body parts across five categories: Head, Torso, Arms, Lower Body, and Legs/Feet. Each card features distinctive texture tags like Fur, Scales, and Feathers that align with hidden agenda scoring objectives. When players successfully claim a specimen card after winning a bid, they engage in light storytelling to describe their cryptid sighting. The game balances individual competition with collective risk through a shared "hoax meter" monitored by an NPC Reality TV crew. Players use character abilities and Smoke & Mirrors cards to outmaneuver opponents while managing the town's exposure level. Push too hard for personal victory and the cameras might catch everyone, causing all players to lose despite individual progress.
